Château Clos du Roy 2020 is a gloriously generous expression of Fronsac. The Merlot is dominant and in a decidedly opulent mood, delivering an impressive concentration of dark red berries, ripe cherries and intriguing savoury notes. Fennel, espresso and floral fragrances weave through the fruit, creating an aromatic impression that is both powerful and wonderfully inviting. There’s nothing timid about this wine, yet its richness comes with plenty of character.
The palate is full-bodied, densely layered and beautifully textured, with a richness that seems to unfold in successive waves. Dark berries and cherries dominate initially, followed by espresso and a lingering impression of chocolate-coated fruit. What makes the wine particularly appealing is the freshness running through all that concentration. The finish is long, generous and persistent, with the fruit maintaining its presence rather than fading behind the structure. This is substantial Bordeaux with a decidedly pleasurable personality.
Drinking well now and capable of developing through 2035. Pair it with slow-roasted beef, duck confit or rich mushroom dishes. Fronsac at its most persuasive: generous, deeply flavoured and immensely satisfying.
