The customer feedback has been so good on this wine that this must be the third or fourth shipment of it that I have brought in over the last year.
Château Barrail St-André 2019 is a muscularly composed Saint-Émilion Grand Cru that brings together the richness of ripe Merlot and the savoury complexity that makes good Bordeaux so compelling. The bouquet is powerfully inviting, opening with gorgeous black cherry, plum and blackberry jam before revealing cedar, cocoa, coffee and spice. There’s an appealing autumnal quality too, with dried leaves, earthy undertones and a suggestion of graphite providing a distinctly classical Bordeaux counterpoint to the ripe fruit.
The palate is plush and enveloping, with Merlot’s natural generosity providing a luxurious cushion of dark fruit. Silky, beautifully integrated tannins give the wine shape without making it feel heavy or demanding. Mocha and gentle spice emerge alongside the fruit, while the carefully judged oak maturation adds warmth and complexity without taking centre stage. The finish is long, smooth and enveloping, with lingering dark berries and savoury notes encouraging another glass. This is polished Bordeaux with genuine substance behind its very upfront charm.
Drinking beautifully now, particularly with some decanting, and recommended through 2030 and beyond. Roast lamb, duck breast or a wild mushroom risotto would all be excellent companions. A thoroughly convincing Saint-Émilion Grand Cru that delivers richness without sacrificing refinement.
