Domaine Désertaux-Ferrand’s 2024 has all the aromatic charm you could wish for, opening with earthy forest-floor notes, bright red cherry and wild strawberry. A faint smoky reduction adds an intriguing savoury twist without overwhelming the fruit. The colour is classically Pinot, while the bouquet manages to be immediately inviting yet sufficiently interesting to encourage another sniff. This is Burgundy with genuine personality, not merely a pleasant introduction to the region.
Fine-boned and assured, the palate combines the natural juicy generosity of ripe Pinot Noir with the tight structure that is the hallmark of Burgundy. Gentle tannins, subtle spice and a defined, savoury mineral thread provide precision and persistence. It’s easy to drink but there’s enough seriousness here to keep more experienced Burgundy lovers thoroughly engaged and entertained.
Enjoy now or cellar through 2030. Roast chicken, duck breast or wild mushroom risotto would be terrific companions. A cracking Bourgogne Rouge that offers far more interest than its modest appellation might suggest.
