Named Pierre François Xavier after the current generation of winemakers’ great-grandfather, this is a Sancerre with a very different proposition from the lean, straightforward Sauvignon Blanc many drinkers associate with the appellation. Twelve months in oak gives the wine remarkable character and personality while retaining the ripe Sauvignon aromatics at its core. Those fruit aromas are joined by subtle vanilla notes, creating an inviting combination that immediately signals a richer and more ambitious interpretation of Sancerre though this wine is technically still dry (i.e. no taste-able level of residual sugar remains).

The palate though is smooth, rich and beautifully complex. Oak maturation contributes to that sense of breadth and texture, but the wine remains recognisably Sauvignon Blanc rather than becoming merely an exercise in barrel ageing. This is where its appeal lies: there is enough richness to make each mouthful substantial, while its underlying varietal character keeps the wine clearly connected to its Sancerre origins around the village of Verdigny.

It is ready to drink now and has a drinking window through to 2031. Serve at around 10°C with roast chicken, grilled salmon or a creamy goat’s cheese tart. And goat’s cheese on its own with Sancerre like this is a match made in heaven!
