Esprit d’Autrefois is a Sancerre rouge with serious depth and this cuvée is only made in exceptional vintages. Made entirely from Pinot Noir grown around Verdigny, it shows a deep ruby colour and concentrated red-fruit aromas, with age bringing a more developed character of candied fruit, chocolate and spice. Eighteen months in oak adds another dimension without obscuring the wine’s central depth of fruit. This is clearly a substantial expression of red Sancerre rather than a deliberately slight or fragile one. That impression continues on the palate, which is rich and meaty with real depth and a subtle oak influence. With the 2020 vintage now carrying some bottle age, its youthful red-fruit concentration is moving into more savoury, developed dimensions.
Drink it now through 2030, serving at around 19°C. Roast duck, pork with mushrooms or a simple plate of charcuterie would all make excellent partners. Rich, mature and deeply fruited, this is Sancerre from a side of the appellation very few Australian drinkers get to see.
