Tasting Note:
“Désir de Marie” is the flagship Sauternes of Château Haut Claverie and simply explodes out of the glass in a heart-melting cloud of richly candied apricot jam, thick Botrytis complexity, and toasty cocoa-oak. 2021 was a landmark vintage for Sauternes and the result is a palate that delivers unctuous sweetness with tangy sweet-sour acidity that are in perfect balance. This really is the complete Sauternes and stands shoulder-to-shoulder with the greatest wines of the appellation but for a fraction of their price. Can be paired with the classic Sauternes accompaniments like pâté and blue cheese (esp. Roquefort) but can also be consumed quite alone like confectionery for adults! If you like Sauternes then I really recommend that you try this truly hedonistic wine which massively over-delivers on its price.
