Domaine des Remizières Cornas rouge 2023. New to TOB.
The steep terraced vineyards of Cornas cling to the precipitous western bank of the Rhône, not far south of Hermitage, and are renowned for making a spicy and evocatively ferrous Shiraz (known locally as “Syrah” but exactly the same variety).
Region: Cornas, Northern Rhône, France
Grape Variety: 100% Syrah
Alcohol Content: 13.0% ABV
Maturation: Aged for 10 months in a combination of 500-litre oak barrels and concrete eggs (i.e. egg-shaped, concrete containers holding about 400 litres of wine).
The 2023 Cornas rouge from Domaine des Remizières is a sinewy embodiment of northern Rhône Syrah—muscular, yet profoundly expressive. Deep garnet in colour, it opens with compelling aromas of blackcurrant, crushed violets, graphite, iron-like minerality, and roasted coffee bean, all underscored by a distinctive smoky edge. The palate delivers bold structure and dense concentration, revealing flavours of blackberry liqueur, smoky charcuterie, olive tapenade, and cracked black pepper, all framed by powerful but polished tannins.
While youthful now, the wine’s precision and depth suggest immense aging potential—ideal for laying down over 10 or many more years. Decanting is recommended to unlock its aromatic complexity if enjoyed in its early years. A perfect match for grilled ribeye, wild game, or hearty lentil stews, this Cornas showcases the finesse behind its intensity. A commanding yet refined Syrah that speaks fluently of granite soils and meticulous craftsmanship.
