100% Syrah/Shiraz. Fully Shiraz-dark colour. Romping white pepper perfume riding on a billowing cloud of blueberry fruit before bustling into an elegant palate of medium-bodied grace and ultra fine tannins. Utterly classy and classical Northern Rhône style and a living definition of the area and its unique interpretation of Syrah. Drink now to 2026. Usually $72.95 per bottle. - Domaine Berthenet “Blanc de Blancs” Brut NV from Burgundy. NEW vintage. A blend of Chardonnay and Aligoté. Made by the traditional bottle-ferment “Champagne method” this just nails the celebratory taste of French sparkling wine: the peachy stone fruit, toasty biscuit, nuts, delicate floral perfume, and a palate that is dry, crisply textured, and long. A dead ringer for Bollinger. Usually $41.95 per bottle.
- Château Picon “Vin du Roy” Bordeaux Supérieur, vintage 2018. 40% Cabernet Sauvignon and the balance is Merlot. 100% new oak. The top wine from Château Picon smashes it out of the park with epic fruit intensity, blackberries, cassis, and blueberries, toasty oak, cigar box, cedar wood, earth and smoky charcuterie, but delivers all this high octane aromatic power with the kind of tailored precision that is associated with a higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend. The palate is deadly in its drinkability, full and rambunctious, but seamlessly joined together, palate-coating and very long in the mouth, again thanks to the added tannin power of the Cabernet Sauvignon. Best served from a decanter, with rich food, as this is a monster wine. Usually $36.95.
- Cidre Honorie, cider from the Pays d’Auge in Normandy. Forget every industrial cider you might have ever tried in your life, and yes, the nose here does scream “APPLES!”, but this idiosyncratic elixir goes far beyond what a simple apple can offer with magnificent spice, ginger, leather, smoky oolong tea, and a feeling of pristine earthiness, that plunges you into a dry palate of swirling crystalline fizz. After delivery, this cider requires a few days in the fridge to reabsorb its fizz, and then open with care (hand over cork, removing it slowly). Usually $35.95 per bottle.
- Château Bonneau Haut-Médoc 2020. NEW vintage. 45% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, and the balance is Merlot. 12 months in barrel. This is classic old-school claret with precise black currant fruit (“cassis”), oak and graphite pencil notes, leather, light smokiness, and then a palate that is elegant and genteel, stately, fresh, and very food-friendly with light tea-like tannins, balance and length. - Thunevin-Calvet “Cuvée Constance” 2019 from Roussillon. 50% Grenache, 30% Shiraz, balance is Carignan. Sultry fruit bomb and a complete crowd pleaser. Comparable in its voluminous/full-bodied/Grenache-based heavenliness to a young-vine Châteauneuf-du-Pape. High octane cherry jam aromatic explosion, fire-roasted marshmallows, and then a palate that is ripe, lush, textured and full. Serve at cellar temperature for a blissful taste experience. - Vignobles des Quatre Vents “Z” Bordeaux 2020. 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot, balance is Merlot. Grown in the estate’s own vineyards directly adjacent to the prime heartland of Margaux. Dark purple. Very meaty and savoury nose, dark and restrained but strong, dense – and what a palate! Incredible balance of full generosity coupled to slate-y mouthfeel and mineral acidity. This is a serious wine for the price and really brings gravitas and artisan sophistication to the AOC Bordeaux category. Absolutely banging modern Bordeaux: classy yet wonderfully full of flavour and all-round sensory satisfaction. Usually $28.95 per bottle.
- Château Rouzerol red 2019 from Castillon in Bordeaux. Pure Merlot. Meaty, dark berry fruit, great intensity and depth. Medium-full bodied palate, fresh and smooth. A cracking any-day-of-the-week red with the kind of flavoursome individuality and structure that could only come from Bordeaux. Usually $27.95 per bottle.
- Château Petit Mouta 2021 from the Graves district of Bordeaux. 90% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. White wine. What Chablis does for Chardonnay, the Graves district of Bordeaux does for Sémillon/Sauvignon blends, and 2021 was a year that brought this quality into laser-pointed focus. The fruit is ultra-fresh with kiwi, gooseberry, lemon and lime fruit, lemon sorbet, capsicum and ginger notions, while the palate is dry, clean, light as a feather, and highly refreshing. Usually $26.95 per bottle.
- Château Lastours “Tradition” 2019 from Gaillac. 30% Shiraz, 18% Braucol, 24% Merlot, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Duras. Peppery and plump red berry fruit, strawberry and cherries, with rich whole-bunch-Pinot-like richness, vibrant and yummy, real if gentle tannins, and nailed to the bullseye of medium-bodied elegance. Drink now to 2025. Usually $25.95 per bottle.
- Domaine Sainte Léocadie “Leukadios” rouge 2021 from Minervois in the Mediterranean hinterland between Carcassonne and Narbonne. NEW TO TOB. 40% Shiraz, 30% Grenache, and 15% each of both Carignan and Mourvèdre. The dark berry fruit and spice is polished, finely detailed, and with some mineral and earthy notes that open up nicely with a little swirl, while the palate is a seriously classy affair with fine and light tannins, medium-full body, but poised and devastatingly drinkable. A cracking any-night-of-the-week red with authentic and flavoursome individuality. Usually $22.95 per bottle.
