- Château Maucoil Châteauneuf-du-Pape red 2020. NEW vintage. 60% Grenache, 15% Shiraz, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Cinsault. Guttural CNDP, muscular, pungently aromatic, with luscious fruit density. lashings of fruit weaving in and out of a dense halo of herbal, earthy, and woody perfumes, natural and expressive. Its body floods the mouth, full in breadth and depth, luscious and deep like velvet, smooth but swarthy, wild around the edges, and firm in its finish. A very big red from France’s ultimate full-bodied capital. Usually $84.95 per bottle.
- Château Palais Cardinal “Grand Vin” Saint-Émilion Grand Cru 2019. 23% Cabernet Sauvignon, 6% Cabernet Franc, and balance is Merlot. The fruit is laser focused here in the dark berry spectrum, rich and deep but not at all jammy, fresh and tight with savoury notes of wood smoke, smoked ham and clove-y/oaky spice, while the tannin is forged with the finest tannins, gently gripping, and long. Usually $55.95 per bottle.
- Le Mas des Flauzières “Four d’Anuga” from Gigondas in the Southern Rhône Valley, vintage 2021. NEW VINTAGE. 70% Grenache, 20% Shiraz, and 10% Mourvèdre. Like a high octane red Burgundy this has brooding fruit, the darkest dark side of Pinot Noir, black cherry essence, smoked-tea duck, cinnamon and pepper, intensely serious in style, rich without opulence, perfumed without being exotic, it is besuited and tailor-made in its careful and conservative cut, with fruit and savoury complexity/woody-earthiness in equal proportion. Usually $48.95 per bottle.
- Domaine Berthenet red Burgundy 2021. 100% Pinot Noir. Ultra perfumed prettiness, lifted black cherry and black currant Pinot fruit of captivating purity carefully woven into an aura of delicate oak and earth, while the palate is beautifully balanced, very fine and graceful, light and refined but robust enough. Super finesse from a classic cool climate vintage that suited sun-shy Pinot Noir very well. Not simply “Pinot Noir” but a single vineyard expression of authenticity, breeding, and style. Usually $45.95 per bottle.
- Domaine Thunevin-Calvet “L’Amourette” red wine from the Côtes du Roussillon Villages, vintage 2019. NEW to TOB. 60% Mourvèdre, 40% Grenache. Very ripe, powerful, and fruit-driven but dignified and nuanced with cheeky notes of cherries, blackberry, turkish delight, marzipan and fruit cake, while the palate is full-bodied, lavish in its generosity but pulls tight at the end with some serious grape tannin that keeps the finish savoury and food-friendly. Indulgent and very satisfying crowd-pleaser. Scored 93/100 by Rhône and Mediterranean expert Jeb Dunnuck. Usually $39.95 per bottle. Two bottles of this wine.
- Château Divine Bêtise 2019 from Montagne Saint-Émilion. NEW to TOB.
20% Cabernet Franc and the balance is Merlot. Montagne Saint-Émilion is a village equidistant from Saint-Émilion and Pomerol, up on the plateau. Stunning red from a classic vintage of flair and upfront beauty. Oodles of dark fruit, blackberry jam, violets, cigar box, cedar, cranberry, licorice and earthy notes, while the palate is firmly built but not muscular, more tightly elegant, gripping and long, precise and determined. At the full end of medium-bodied. Very stylish and with good future prospects. Usually $39.95 per bottle. - Moingeon “Crémant de Bourgogne” Brut Vintage 2020, sparkling white wine from Burgundy. 40% Chardonnay, 30% Pinot Noir, 30% Aligoté. Made using the traditional “Champagne method”. The Chardonnay here takes centre stage with peach and honeydew melon fruit, lemon sorbet, toasty meringue and brioche notes, while the palate is very lively, incisively crisp and dry, and perfectly thirst-quenching. Usually $36.95 per bottle.
- “L’Enclos de Virginie” Bordeaux red 2018. 100% Merlot. 50% aged in new French oak barrels. Banging everyday Bordeaux from an outstanding vintage and with a nice degree of cellar-aged character starting to show. Mulberry and blackberry jam fruit, licorice and woodsmoke, pencil shavings and moroccan leather, while the palate is at the elegant end of full-bodied, textured and firm with gentle tannins that are mellowing nicely into middle age. Scored 92/100 by US über-critic James Suckling. Usually $36.95 per bottle.
- Domaine du Père Benoit Beaujolais red 2021. 100% Gamay from 85-year-old vines. Surging and vivacious fruit perfume, black cherry and raspberry compote, cinnamon and wood notes, while the palate has devastating drinkability, fresh and suave, elegant and balanced. Usually $33.95 per bottle.
- La Cave de Cairanne “La Grande Réserve” white wine 2021 from Cairanne in the southern Rhône. 50% Grenache Blanc and the balance is made up of Clairette and Bourbolenc. Luscious rock melon and peach fruit, jasmine and elderflowers, while the palate is medium-bodied and gently textured with balance and freshness, dry, and a long clean finish in the mouth. Usually $30.95 per bottle.
- Château Petit Mouta, white wine from the Graves district of Bordeaux, vintage 2021.
90% Sémillon and 10% Sauvignon Blanc. 2021 was hugely successful for Bordeaux whites as this wine emphatically demonstrates. The aromatics are fresh and intense with notes of lime, ginger, and lemongrass, while the palate is a dead ringer for Chablis with its crisp elegance and ethereal lightness. Outstanding value-for-money from Bordeaux’s pre-eminent white wine district. Usually $26.95 per bottle.
