Château Maucoil Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Tradition” Rouge 2022.
60% Grenache, 20% Shiraz, 20% Mourvèdre.
This is an intensely young Châteauneuf-du-Pape cut from some of the finest cloth that CNDP has to offer. It was only bottled in the second half of last year and so the fruit is still extremely glossy, deep, and intense with lashings of blackberry, blueberry, and plum jam, highlighted with marzipan and licorice notes, while the palate (at 15%) is voluminous and neatly structured. This is a young wine though that will grow out of its “puppy fruit” and grow into a meaty beast over the next year or two.
The Grenache sets out a canvas of heroic breadth, Shiraz adds purple colour and spice, and the Mourvèdre adds the earthy complexity, making for a sumptuous and complete CNDP with a very bright future.
