Mind bogglingly beautiful white with explosive aromatic attractiveness, fruits, flowers, and stone, barrel ferment smoky oak, and then a palate of precise and crystalline perfection worthy of a great white Burgundy from Puligny Montrachet, just for a fifth of the price. When it comes to quality, age-worthiness, and value-for-money, Chenin Blanc from the Loire is in my opinion the greatest white wine in the world – by a wide margin. It combines the fruit panache of white Burgundy with the acid-driven palate seriousness of the best of Alsace Riesling and even the least expensive can be safely cellared for a decade or two and see real benefits in the glass at the end of that time. This wine is a classic of the type: aromatically it has Burgundian fruit reminiscent of Chablis, apples, peach, and stone, a typical note of Lanolin, and then a palate that is tight, dry, and long. A wine to contemplate and accompany your favourite foods. Usually $42.95 per bottle. 1 bottle in this mixed dozen. - Vignerons de l’Ardèche “Les Gravettes” Chardonnay 2020. New to TOB. From the Ardèche high country up and over the right bank of the Rhône river. 100% Chardonnay. Crystalline, unoaked, pure fruit (citrus, white peach, pears): in other words straight down the line in terms of Chardonnay aromatics but, as always, it’s on the palate where this wine shows its true class with a stunningly fresh and elegant line of acidity that is long and classical like a vibrating violin string. Such finesse is increasingly rare in the increasingly warm vineyards of Burgundy, but this wine absolutely nails the traditional chalky and driven Puligny palate style for a giveaway price. - Ruhlmann-Schutz “Cuvée Jean-Charles” Riesling 2020. NEW vintage. 100% Riesling. Lemon and lime fruit, hints of lime marmalade, orange blossom, and ginger, clean and fresh, but the palate is dry and seriously good, with zing and tingly mouthfeel that goes on endlessly across the palate. Should age quite nicely over the next 5 years developing richness and depth. Usually $36.95 per bottle. 2 bottles in this mixed dozen.
- Château Valmont Corbières rosé 2021. Grenache/Mourvèdre/Shiraz blend. Pale peachy pink, delicate notes of blossom, confectionery, potpourri, clean linen, sea spray, and then a palate that is dry, fresh, and perfectly easy to drink. French summer in a glass. - Château Palais Cardinal “La Rose de Palais Cardinal” Bordeaux rosé 2021. NEW to TOB. Merlot/Cabernet Sauvignon blend. It’s incredibly rare to find a rosé as pristine and delicate as this. In warmer years Bordeaux rosé can end up a bit broad and hot but 2021 was perfect for the style and this is pale pink, feather-light, softly perfumed, with fragrant notes of wild strawberry, talcum, and blackcurrant, while the palate is dry, balanced, and dangerously drinkable.
