Domaine Desertaux-Ferrand Nuits-Saint-Georges Premier Cru “Les Saint-Georges” 2022. NEW.
My understanding from my meeting with the Desertaux-Ferrand clan this week is that “Les Saint-Georges”, undisputedly the greatest Premier Cru vineyard in the vicinity of the village of Nuits-Saint-Georges, has become the first ever Premier Cru vineyard in this area to be selected and now approved for promotion to Grand Cru status. This is the 2022 and so it is still Premier Cru (not officially Grand Cru yet) but the quality is clear to see, from the dark ruby hue, the billowing perfume, the slightly quirky aromatic lift – the tiny deviation from the norm that is the hallmark of a truly great vineyard and that gives the impression aromatically of there being two somehow separate layers to its smell, the basic fruit common to all Pinot Noir and then another layer that sheers away into its own space and that I suppose is the imprint of the unique terroir of Les Saint-Georges. The palate is crisply defined with firm and savoury tannins, coupled to tightening acidity and framed by generous and succulent body. It’s Grand Cru quality for top Premier Cru price, which really makes this a bit of a bargain! I don’t recommend buying wine as a financial investment but I certainly expect that all the producers who make wine from Les Saint-Georges Premier Cru would be intending to double their prices if and when the Grand Cru status passes into law.
