Description
Camille Cayran “Antique” 2022 from the from the village of Cairanne in the Côtes-du-Rhône Villages appellation.
60% Grenache, 30% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah (AKA Shiraz).
Cairanne is one of the most recent villages in the southern Rhône to be promoted to the elite “Côtes-du-Rhône Villages” fraternity, which really puzzles me because the wines from here leap out of the glass and the village’s top offerings such as this (the flagship wine of the Camille Cayran range) are fully on par with not-so-far-away Châteauneuf-du-Pape, just for half to a third of the price of their illustrious neighbours.
Even in the allegedly “weaker” year of 2021 the Cuvée “Antique” was a stunning wine but this, from the rock solid 2022 vintage, is grandiose stuff, subtle as an exploding volcano but gorgeously attractive and slurpably indulgent. I first tried this new vintage with the winery at an event in Paris in February and I can only really say that it throws out a wall of red-wine power and potential, a seismic wine that is only just exploding out of the “Big Bang” moment of its youth but that has a very long future ahead of it. The most impressive of the 3 vintages of this cuvée that I have tasted so far and an utter bargain.
