“Enclos de Virginie” Bordeaux 2022, by JL Thunevin.
Region: Bordeaux, France
Producer: Jean-Luc Thunevin
Grape Variety: 100% Merlot
Alcohol Content: 15.5% ABV
Tasting Note:
Rated 92/100 by James Suckling, the 2022 L’Enclos de Virginie is a bold, unapologetically rich expression of Merlot from one of Bordeaux’s most maverick winemakers. In the glass, it’s almost black, with an impenetrable core and a deep garnet rim. Aromas erupt with dark cherries, cassis, roasted plum, and cedarwood, lifted by floral violet notes and underpinned by earthy spice. The palate is luxuriously full-bodied and plush, packed with ripe black fruits, espresso, grilled meat, and high-quality oak. The texture is dense yet creamy, thanks to fondant-like tannins and an enveloping, velveteen structure that speaks of Pomerol-level depth and precision.
This is an outrageously concentrated wine with real presence, destined to impress both collectors and thrill-seekers. Outstanding value for the pedigree, it drinks beautifully now with decanting, but promises even greater complexity through 2030 and beyond. Pair with dry-aged ribeye, duck confit, or a truffle risotto for a truly hedonistic experience.
92 Points from James Suckling.
