3. Domaine Sergent “Les Noyers” 2019 from Madiran, in the foothills of the Pyrenees, halfway between Bordeaux and the Mediterranean. New vintage.
100% Tannat. 12 months maturation in barrels, some new.
A grandiose beast of a wine! Very dark black currant colour, clean oak and earth, vanilla, rhubarb, custard, blueberries, dense yet low key/not sweet fruit – savoury in tone – while the palate is statuesque yet plush with sweet-spot drinkability, lashings of very fine tannin, and marked but ideally refreshing acidity to rein in such a magnificently rugged wine. Very serious cellaring prospects.
