#8. “Côtes Blanches” Sancerre Pinot Noir RED 2022 by Nicolas Millet.

Did you know that Sancerre is also one of France’s top regions for Pinot Noir? I recently spent three days tasting at a major wine industry expo’ called Wine Paris, where I was looking primarily at red Burgundy from household names like Gevrey-Chambertin and Pommard where the quality was certainly very good (but for 3-figure retail prices every time $$$) and yet this, the “Côtes Blanches” Sancerre Pinot Noir RED 2022 by Nicolas Millet, was not only (by a long way) the best VALUE Pinot Noir I got to taste at Wine Paris but also, quite simply, the BEST Pinot that I saw over those three days, at any price. Like all the best Pinot, this wine isn’t just about fruit, though it certainly has high aromatic impact and seductive appeal, but the fruit has dissolved into a cloud of earthy pinosity, spicy and evocative, nuanced with meaty/mushroom-y/smoky notes, bark and mulch, cracked rock and smoky duck, ozone and cloves, while the palate is suave, delicately built, neatly cut, and modestly assertive. It’s not trying to be Burgundy but Pinot Noir from Sancerre – like this one – certainly deserves to be just as famous.
