Here is a wine that needs little introduction except to say that it needs time to show its full potential and a decanter is a must.

Château La Gaffelière 2023 brings together 58% Merlot for power and a substantial 42% Cabernet Franc for structural elegance, producing a deeply expressive wine with both epic intensity and laser sharp definition. Ripe black cherry, mulberry, smoky oak and crispy roast meat lead the nose, joined by touches of iodine and floral violets. There is plenty of flavour and presence from the outset, yet the overall impression is not simply one of size. Its aromatics have detail and distinction, setting up a wine that combines generosity with a more finely drawn character.

The palate is full-bodied, flavourful and structured, but the structure is very fine boned rather than muscular. Fine tannins and good acidity give shape and energy, carrying the wine towards a long and lingering finish. Eighteen months in oak provides the maturation framework for a wine clearly designed with fine food and longevity in mind. It has concentration, but there is precision within that concentration—the quality that keeps a substantial Saint-Émilion compelling rather than merely powerful.

Drink from 2030 through to 2040 and beyond. Serve at around 19°C with roast beef, lamb or duck. Awarded 95/100 by James Suckling, this is serious, structured Saint-Émilion built for a long future.
