Tasting Note:
This is benchmark Madiran absolutely in the zone for drinking now. If you want to know what quintessential Madiran looks like then look no further because, at 6-years-old, this is a suitable archetype for all Madiran.

Deeply coloured opaque ruby with a terracotta rim, Domaine Sergent “Tradition” 2020 is a commanding, old-school Madiran that speaks unapologetically of its origins and just enough bottle age now to make this wonderfully approachable. The nose is rich and savoury, opening with meaty nuances layered over ripe plum, leather, walnuts, and black fruit, followed by intriguing notes of marzipan, caramel, and a hint of cocoa. There’s a rustic charm here, balanced by a surprising aromatic complexity.

On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and assertively structured, driven by firm, grippy tannins that promise long evolution. Despite its dryness, there’s a subtle Port-like richness to the fruit, adding depth and a touch of warmth. Dark plum, blackberry, and earthy spice dominate, supported by a solid backbone and lingering finish.

Built for hearty fare, this is a natural partner to red meats, slow-cooked casseroles (especially the local speciality of cassoulet that has been paired with the wines from here for centuries), and game dishes. Drinking well now with decanting, it will reward patient cellaring through to 2035 and beyond, developing further complexity and softness over time.

Madiran is a famously long-lived wine but this one is approachable now but can also be kept for many years.
