100% Chardonnay fermented and aged in a mixture of new and old oak. From the Premier Cru “Perrières” vineyard in southern Burgundy.
The Berthenet portfolio is so stuffed full of outstanding Chardonnay that it is difficult to say that any one of them is “the flagship” of the estate but when I tasted the full range in France in February, the Perrières was the standout for me. The key here is the wine’s limpid purity and freshness which allows the terroir to sing as a solo above the influence of the winemaker.
Lemon rind, orange blossom, acacia wood, green apple, baking bread, with crackling notes of wood smoke and ozone, while the palate is dry, tight, invigorating and long with almost salty juiciness. A very precise and focused Chardonnay.
