Description
#7. Maison Bruyère et David “Plaisir” Syrah 2021 from the Northern Rhône. NEW VINTAGE.
100% Syrah (exactly the same grape variety as “Shiraz”).
Cool vintage 2021 gave Pinot-hued reds that take you back to the glory days (i.e. pre-global warming era) of the Northern Rhône when Syrah/Shiraz earned its reputation for spice, particularly its pepperiness. It’s often a character that has been cooked out by increasingly hot summers but this 2021 offers an explosion of black and white pepper along with some Pinot-esque dark berry fruit, but it’s the palate that is really extraordinary with dry and firm medium body delivering swathes of creamy-oaky flavour. Not a wine for long-term cellaring but if you want a near-term cracker that re-calibrates your love of cool climate Shiraz then this is an absolute stunner you do not want to miss out on.
