Description
Le Couvent des Jacobins Saint-Émilion Grand Cru CLASSÉ 2019.
New to TOB.
Merlot (85%), Cabernet Franc (10%), and (5%) Petit Verdot blend. Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé is a higher grade above Saint-Émilion Grand Cru and was awarded following a new quality hierarchy put in place in 1955. Le Couvent des Jacobins is the only Grand Cru Classé that has kept its prices sane and it is the only remaining winery within the walls of Saint-Émilion. Couvent des Jacobins has mastered the use of Petit Verdot to achieve a Grand Vin of distinguished individuality. I tasted this new release with the winemaker last week and it was the wine tasting highlight of my two weeks in Saint-Émilion.
Bam! Profound beauty, elegance, complexity and power. A wine of precise craftsmanship in which the aromatics are all individually identifiable and polished: the plangent Merlot fruit; the savoury spice of the Petit Verdot; the fragrant leafiness of the Cabernet Franc; the seductive smoky sensuousness of the ultra high quality oak. The palate is pin-striped perfection, full and succulent but formally very neat and structured too with plenty of everything and all in the right places: the body, the elegance, the tannin. It doesn’t get much better than this. Top echelon wine at a reasonable price.
Drink now to 2038.
