Domaine de Pignan Côtes-du-Rhône 2024. NEW.

80% Grenache, 20% Shiraz.

I went to meet with the Charvin family in February at Wine Paris because of what I had heard about their Châteauneuf-du-Pape and so I was not expecting their Côtes-du-Rhône to be such a killer wine in its own right. Côtes-du-Rhône is often made in vast quantities by producers of Châteauneuf-du-Pape (50,000+ bottles of Côte-du-Rhône from a single small producer is not at all uncommon) but the Charvins only make three thousand bottles of theirs in most years and so they give it the full 5-star treatment with a proportion even being aged in barrel. Consequently this is a serious wine in its own right, powerfully aromatic and very finely structured. They even put this in a very handsome bottle that reeks class! This is a thoroughbred among Côtes-du-Rhônes and I can’t recommend it to you highly enough.

Blazing aromatics leap from the glass with pumped up cherry jam in ultra high definition and savoury notes of struck-flint smoke, while the palate is juicy and copious, finishing firm and long, with a wonderful black pepper spiciness that rises like a phoenix at the very end!

14% ABV.
