Description
Château Maucoil, Châteauneuf-du-Pape “Parcelle Le Pin” RED 2022.
100% Grenache.
Château Maucoil was taken over by new owner Bernard Duseigneur in 2022 and he has taken the wines to the next level. The estate was always one of the greatest in Châteauneuf-du-Pape but Monsieur Duseigneur brings to the property a level of winemaking imagination and detail that wasn’t present before. The results have been instant. The entry-level Côtes-du-Rhône Villages wines were always very enjoyable but the 2022 was (suddenly!) a seriously complete wine too with structure as well as the more simply ebullient fruit that had characterised it in previous vintages. But this, the property’s new icon wine, named “Parcelle Le Pin”, is the first top end statement of the new direction in which Monsieur Duseigneur is taking the estate. He introduced me to this wine at a meeting in Paris in early February and I was blown away. Inspired by the greatest wine in CNDP (Château Rayas), “Parcelle Le Pin” (like Rayas) is made from pure Grenache grown in deep sandy soils (not the river-smoothed “pudding” stones that the soils of CNDP are more commonly associated with) and the result grabs the senses with its deliciousness and individuality. The fruit is buxom as you’d expect but rife with a spicy complexity, high pitched and earthy at the same time, offering notes of wild strawberry and cinnamon, oolong tea and duck confit, while the palate is full-with-backbone, generous yet structured and utterly elegant. Drink now for exuberant, cat-walk “show-off” style, or keep for a long and adventurous life in cellar, to 2030++
