100% Gamay from the prestigious Côte du Py vineyard in the Beaujolais sub-region of Morgon. Domaine Berthenet itself is in Burgundy in the village of Montagny but they also own a vineyard in not-so-far-away Morgon, allowing them to add this iconic Beaujolais to their fantastic Burgundy portfolio.
From the second you pour this wine in the glass you can see – and smell! – why Côte du Py has become such a cult commune of the Morgon district, which has itself always punched above the weight of other Beaujolais villages, where light and pretty reds have been the traditional norm.
Dark ruby colour. Really somber dark fruit, opaque and nuanced, and not at all what you expect from Gamay/Beaujolais, with masses of earth, mineral, rock, graphite, violets, and oak, while the palate is at the generous end of medium-bodied, densely textured, mouth-filling, long. Exceptional deliciousness!
