When it comes to quality, age-worthiness, and value-for-money, Chenin Blanc from the Loire is in my opinion the greatest white wine in the world – by a wide margin. It combines the fruit panache of white Burgundy with the acid-driven palate seriousness of the best of Alsace Riesling and even the least expensive can be safely cellared for a decade or two and see real benefits in the glass at the end of that time. This wine is a classic of the type: aromatically it has Burgundian fruit reminiscent of Chablis, apples, peach, and stone, a typical note of Lanolin, and then a palate that is tight, dry, and long. A wine to contemplate and accompany your favourite foods.
