Tasting Note:
A sensational mature Maury from the dramatic terraced vineyards of Roussillon, where old Grenache vines thrive among grey flint soils overlooking the Mediterranean. The 1998 Thunevin-Calvet Maury delivers an explosive, deeply indulgent profile: caramel, raisins, Christmas pudding, brandy butter and dark chocolate surge from the glass, followed by cinnamon, cloves, roasted nuts and a savoury thread of smoky oak. Sweet, generous and powerful, yet never cloying, it has the balance and structure that make great fortified Grenache so compelling. Nearly three decades of age have brought beautiful complexity, while its concentration promises many more years of pleasure. A superb alternative to vintage Port (I believe Maury ages far better than Port!), offering remarkable depth and value. Serve slightly chilled with chocolate fondant, sticky date pudding, blue cheese, roasted nuts or simply by the fire after dinner.
