Domaine Thunevin-Calvet “Cuvée Constance” 2021, Côtes-du-Roussillon Villages. New Vintage.
50% Grenache, 30% Shiraz, balance is Carignan. Made by legendary Bordeaux winemaker Jean-Luc Thunevin, founder and winemaker at the iconic Château Valandraud in Saint-Émilion, in partnership with Roussillon vigneron Jean-Roger Calvet. 60 cases available in total.
A beautiful, deep and intense red. 2021 was such a tricky year for so many French wine regions – but not Roussillon! In fact, in 2021, Roussillon experienced one of their greatest vintages of all time, principally due to the near-absence of rain that resulted in this wine of such concentrated fruit expression coupled to silky finesse and ultimate drinkability. In great years, even the least expensive wines can overperform and that is definitely the case here. Ebullient perfume and complexity, sumptuous elegance in the mouth, at the most full end of medium-bodied but you’d never know this was 14.5%. Definitely one of the best entry level wines I have ever had the opportunity to import. Extremely highly rated by the critics as well. Power and elegance.
By the way, Thunevin-Calvet make a string of other releases costing up to $150 per bottle but this wine has always been my favourite from their Roussillon range!
