Domaine Juliette Avril Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023 is made by Stéphan (photo below), the grandson of the estate’s founder (Juliette Avril herself) and is as honest and authentic an artisan CNDP as you could hope to find.
It’s classic CNDP, very dark – almost black! – with a royal purple hue around the edge, before an eruption of dense and ripe Grenache fruit, meaty but pure and concentrated, dense and dark, sweet cherry jam in its youthful ebullience, raisins, marzipan, and chocolate. The palate is of course voluminous and high octane but this is a very young CNDP and given some cellar time will settle down and evolve myriad layers and those leathery, earthy, and floral notes of age. Classic and pure CNDP with true artisan origins from the best terroirs of the region. An assured future ahead. Give an hour or two to breathe or ideally decant on opening.
