Description
Château Maucoil Châteauneuf-du-Pape red 2019.
60% Grenache, 15% Shiraz, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Cinsault.
While wine #4 (see above) is a good introduction to the CNDP style, 12 months of barrel maturation turns the fruit of some of Maucoil’s best old vines into the absolute essence of Châteauneuf-du-Pape: very bright and youthful nose, cologne, rose water, turkish delight, chocolate, smokey earth, smoldering oak, barbecued bacon, and lashings of fruit, while the palate is extremely tight (given its monstrous volume), with juicy acidity and tightly corseted with some very fine tannin, graphite/slaty oak bite, gripping and claret-like in its savouriness. The palate has an intensity to its structure that will take time to soften to its best. I’m not saying it’s not a decadent pleasure to drink now but this has serious mid-term potential as well.
