When I went to France in February this year I was hunting for new suppliers of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay for very sharp prices, which basically implies that I wasn’t looking for Burgundy! So imagine my satisfaction when I came across the Greuzard family who had been vignerons in Burgundy for many generations and had relatively recently moved to Domaine de l’Herbe Sainte (45 minutes east from Carcassonne) with a view to growing top flight Chardonnay and Pinot Noir in the Pays d’Oc. It really was the best of both worlds: Chardonnay and Pinot Noir made by a family from Burgundy but at highly reasonable prices. And their Pinot in particular was a steal! Unlike in Burgundy where high acidity abd more precise aromatics is the norm, Pinot in the Pays d’Oc has rich aromatics, generous body and plush smoothness. This may not be Burgundy but it has wonderful Pinot Noir expression at a price that you just can’t argue with!
