Domaine de Pignan’s Châteauneuf-du-Pape 2023 is a thunderous expression of the southern Rhône, delivering the sort of aromatic intensity that makes this famous appellation so compelling. The bouquet erupts with meaty roasted Provençal herbs, black cherry jam, sun-drenched figs and the unmistakable savoury character of smoky, charcoal-grilled meat. It’s rich, powerful and wonderfully evocative of the southern Rhône, with an aromatic generosity that promises serious drinking pleasure.
The palate delivers on that promise with a wave of ripe, concentrated fruit. Grenache provides its characteristic velvet richness, Syrah contributes dark spice, while Mourvèdre brings a deep savoury backbone that prevents the wine from becoming overly high toned and exuberant. Full-bodied and opulent, it nevertheless maintains impressive harmony, with polished tannins supporting the fruit and a sumptuous finish that seems determined to linger. There’s considerable power here, but also the balance and structure needed to keep everything beautifully composed.
Ready to enjoy now for its magnificent fruit, with further development expected through 2035. Serve with charcoal-grilled lamb, slow-cooked game or risotto. A wonderfully satisfying Châteauneuf-du-Pape that delivers power, personality and genuine southern Rhône pleasure.
