Domaine Désertaux-Ferrand’s Les Perrières 2023 is a cracking example of Burgundy Pinot Noir with serious flavour and an unmistakably rich personality. Pinot can be light – but not this one! Les Perrières is consistently ripe and concentrated in style, even in relatively mild vintages like 2023.
Dark in the glass, Les Perrières 2023 announces itself with a generous aromatic combination of black cherry, blackberry and cassis, accompanied by toasty oak, earthy Pinot character and hints of leather. Ripe plums add another layer of fruit richness. There’s an appealing tension between the wine’s exuberant dark fruit and its more savoury, earthy undertones, giving the bouquet plenty of layers and interest.
The palate is saturated with flavour, offering a mouth-coating richness that immediately distinguishes it from more delicate expressions of Pinot Noir. Juicy fruit meets a chewy, substantial structure, with dark berries and savoury elements competing for attention. The texture is generous without losing definition, while the finish is long, firm and satisfyingly persistent. What makes this wine particularly engaging is the way it sits tantalisingly between richness and savouriness. Neither side completely dominates, and that tension is key to Les Perrière’s attraction.
Enjoy now or cellar through 2032. Roast duck, venison or a classic beef bourguignon would make terrific partners. Classic Burgundy Pinot with real substance, single vineyard individuality, and compelling bang-for-buck.
