Deeply perfumed, elegant, fleshy and generous, Château Trapaud’s 2022 Saint-Émilion Grand Cru has an unusually high 62% Cabernet Franc alongside 38% Merlot. The nose combines cassis and fresh wild blackberry with smaller red berries and fresh floral notes, before cardamom, black tea and liquorice bring a more savoury dimension. Subtle chocolate and toasted hazelnut notes sit underneath, entirely at home after the wine’s 12 months in oak. There is definition, freshness and plenty going on without the aromatics becoming muddled.
The palate carries that generosity forward, with distinguished tannins that retain a fine softness. The wine is fleshy but composed, and its good length gives those layers time to develop rather than rushing towards the finish. This combination of perfume, freshness and generosity gives the 2022 considerable appeal already, while its structure provides ample reason to keep bottles in the cellar.
Drink now through 2036, serving at around 17°C with duck breast, roast lamb or beef fillet. Certified organic and awarded 92/100 by James Suckling, this is a distinctive Cabernet Franc-led Saint-Émilion with both generosity and refinement.
