The 2023 Grand Aven brings together the sun-ripened generosity of southern Ardèche Grenache with the spice and structure of Shiraz, delivering a bold yet easy-drinking red of outstanding value.
Deep ruby in the glass, it offers an extremely ripe and meaty nose of black cherry, prunes, figs, plum, and raspberry jam, layered with peppery spice, and a touch of earthy, herby garrigue.
The palate is full-flavoured and smooth, showing juicy red and black fruit, hints of licorice and cracked pepper, and a gentle warmth from its 14% alcohol. Tannins are soft and rounded, offering a plush mouthfeel without heaviness but still a macho and muscular red.
Versatile and crowd-pleasing, it’s a great match for barbecued meats, pizza, or a simple pasta ragù.
Drink now through 2028. Best served just below room temperature. The previous (2022) vintage was rated a more-than-respectable 90 out of 100 points by James Suckling.
