“L’Envolée” Saint-Émilion 2020, by Château Lapelletrie. New to TOB.
20% Cabernet Franc, 80% Merlot. This wine is classified as Saint-Émilion but comes from the young vines of Saint-Émilion Grand Cru producer Château Lapelletrie, which I also import.
This massively over-performs the Saint-Émilion category with a deep and dark garnet hue and then an extravagant aromatic profile featuring rich fruit and earthy-meatiness, leather and oregano, smooshed blackberries, summer compote, violets, graphite, and opulent baking spice as its youthful ebullience begins to break into maturity. On the palate it is at the full end of medium-bodied, with sleek tannins and great flavour follow-through offering notes of cocoa, coffee, earth, and wood. The palate is firm but polished and smooth. Decanting is highly recommended for this wine.
