Finally! After many years of searching I have found a producer with vineyards in some of the smartest areas of Burgundy, who makes wines of the highest possible quality, but who sells them for prices that actually represent good value-for-money. I honestly feel that I have not come across another producer in “central” Burgundy (the celebrated Côte de Nuits) that has been able to offer this combination of characteristics in over 20 years. I worked in Burgundy in 2005 for the harvest and my feeling is that that was one of the last years when it was still possible to find value-for-money from these kinds of appellations, from real family-owned estates. After 2005 the prices went really crazy. Could we be starting to see a bit of sanity starting to return to the Burgundy wine maket? I believe so. Just as importantly, Vincent and his family team (wife Geneviève and son Bastien), are such warm and down-to-Earth people and so it thrills me to know that we may be able to continue to share their infectious passion for the very best of Burgundy over many vintages to come.
Good value-for-money for such a real “artisan” Burgundy, elegant body with real backbone but really juicy-sweet on the palate (but not in the “sugar” sense of sweet – just ultra flattering and slurpable), earthy aromatics with a little smoky reduction, and classic Burgundy colour. So much basic Bourgogne Pinot Noir is too simple to be really satisfying but this one has a good deal of complexity and texture to it. It’s their entry level wine and so they might well have many greater things in the Desertaux-Ferrand portfolio but this is a darn good place to start and offers a solid wine-drinking experience in itself, not simply an entry point to the rest of the portfolio. This isn’t just basic Burgundy, this is basic Burgundy from the Côte de Nuits and that apparently slight difference is in fact very telling indeed. Demands food and decanting is highly recommended.
