Description
Château Maucoil Châteauneuf-du-Pape BLANC 2023. NEW.
40% Grenache Blanc, 40% Clairette, 20% Rousanne.
I’ve been wanting to import this wine for about ten years but have always held off doing so because I wondered if people would realise that white wine from Châteauneuf-du-Pape is frequently more expensive than its (admittedly more famous) red counterpart because, being produced in much smaller quantities, the whites are a relative rarity – and a glorious one at that! I’m being conservative in my cellaring prediction because I haven’t personally seen older bottles of this particular white Châteauneuf from Maucoil, but I have seen ones of a similar quality from neighbouring properties age brilliantly for 15 years or more. The grapes are hand-harvested at night to maximise freshness, aromatic intensity, and palate zing.
This is a white wine that has it all! The Grenache Blanc brings notes of spiced pear, talcum, and lanolin in a way that reminds me of Chenin Blanc from the Loire, while the Clairette strengthens and deepens the aromatic profile with rich ripe rock melon and peach, while the Rousanne gives the wine its acid backbone and savoury minerality. It’s a wonderful blend that I highly recommend to you.
