Description
Château Mauras Sauternes from vintage 2012. 500mL bottle.
Majority Sémillon and a little Sauvignon Blanc and Muscadelle (the typical Sauternes blend), fermented and aged in oak barrels.
Apricot explosion! Plus lashings of tangerine, nectarine, peach, and notes reminiscent of Cointreau orange liqueur, clean, extrovert, with solar intensity and attractiveness, while the palate is sweet without being cloying, mouthcoating, and very long. The fact Sauternes is now so out of fashion makes the prices a buyer’s dream, yet Sauternes remains for me one of the world’s greatest wines, born of an extraordinary natural phenomenon (the famous “noble rot”) and the overall quality remains stratospheric across the appellation.
Drink now to 2030.
