#8. Château Maucoil Châteauneuf-du-Pape rouge 2022.
60% Grenache, 20% Shiraz, 20% Mourvèdre.
This is an intensely young and spicy Châteauneuf-du-Pape and one with incredible elegance too. It was only bottled in the second half of last year and so the fruit is still extremely glossy, deep, and intense with lashings of black pepper, blackberry, blueberry, and plum jam, highlighted with marzipan and licorice notes, while the palate, thanks to its fine tannin thread, completely hides its 15% ABV and instead drinks with fresh albeit sumptuous elegance.
The Grenache sets out a canvas of heroic breadth, Shiraz adds purple colour and pepper spice, while the Mourvèdre adds the earthy complexity, making for a stunning CNDP with a very bright future.
