Description
Camille Cayran “Grande Réserve” Côtes-du-Rhône Villages 2020. New to TOB.
50% Grenache, 30% Syrah (AKA Shiraz), 20% Mourvèdre. Côtes-du-Rhône Villages is a quality level above basic Côtes-du-Rhône.
Gold medal from the Decanter World Wine Awards 2022 where it was scored a massive 96 out of 100: “Soft, ripe black forest compote note; nice concentration of fruit on the palate. Good weight. Really well balanced in terms of fruit, acidity, and tannin; supple and silky. Lots of juicy, succulent blackberry fruit flavours. Superb length. Some nice complexity coming through through too. Dangerously drinkable! Impressive.”
I looked at this wine again at a tasting with the winery in Paris in February 2024 and at 14,5% ABV it is a beast of a Rhône red! Broad, deep, silky, muscular and mouth-filling. It has filled out in meatiness and earthy complexity.
